The suspect linked to the shooting that took place on Friday at the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office in downtown Wallace has passed away, according to authorities.
This incident necessitated a large-scale law enforcement operation spanning several states and led to two individuals and a deputy being wounded and admitted to the hospital. The critical nature of their injuries has not yet been disclosed.
The gunfire erupted at approximately 2:30 PM local time, with eyewitnesses reporting hearing numerous shots fired near the sheriff’s department. Local business owners indicated that the suspect allegedly fired into an Ace Hardware store across the street before entering the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement entities from Idaho, Washington, and Montana rapidly converged on the scene following reports of an active shooter, as confirmed by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. KHQ later reported that officials announced the suspect had been «neutralized.» Jeff Lavey, the executive director of the Idaho Sheriff’s Association, provided an update, urging people to pray for the injured and hoping for a safe conclusion for everyone present.
Following the shooting, residents in the Silver Valley requiring emergency services were directed to use temporary phone numbers while the scene was managed. Community members needing assistance from Silver Valley Fire Rescue or the Kellogg Fire Department were instructed to call 208-784-1188, while those in Osburn were advised to contact the Osburn Fire Department at 208-752-0152. The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office shares its downtown Wallace location with the county jail, a combined facility situated in a small mountain community of about 1,000 residents, roughly 47 miles east of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
Officials in neighboring Mineral County, Montana, which borders Shoshone County, stated on Facebook that they deployed additional personnel to support the response efforts. This remains an active investigation, and more details are anticipated as officials release further information.
