As Stranger Things heads towards its finale, Nancy and Jonathan’s relationship is examined during a life-threatening event
With the concluding season of Stranger Things now available, viewers are keenly observing the relationship status of Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers. As Season 5, Volume 2 is released, Netflix Tudum and the show’s creators have shed light on their current dynamic and its implications for Nancy’s path forward. Jonathan confesses he never actually applied to Emerson College, and Nancy admits she deliberately kept her distance from him in California, recognizing her need for space.
According to Netflix Tudum’s explanation of Episode 7’s conclusion, the lingering strain between Nancy and Jonathan, which began to surface in Season 4, reaches a critical point during a perilous situation.
Following Nancy’s shot that disrupts an enigmatic sphere, they find themselves confined together in a room rapidly being inundated with a gray, viscous substance, compelling them to engage in a starkly candid discussion.
What the director said
According to director Shawn Levy, who guided Episodes 6 and 7, the characters’ conviction that their demise was imminent unlocked a profound honesty between them. He characterized their dialogue as one of the most emotionally exposed Jonathan-Nancy interactions in the show’s history.
In their heart-to-heart, Jonathan confessed he never actually applied to Emerson, and Nancy admitted her avoidance of visiting him in California stemmed from a need for space. Jonathan also disclosed he had been carrying an engagement ring, concealed within a John Coltrane tape, intending to present Nancy with what he termed an «un-proposal,» recognizing that matrimony wouldn’t mend their fractured bond. Nancy agreed.
Shortly after, the encroaching sludge solidified, and they escaped death, but their romantic connection did not. As confirmed by Netflix Tudum, despite their physical survival, their relationship effectively concluded at that point.
Does Nancy end up with Steve?
While fans have long theorized about a potential romantic reconciliation between Nancy and Steve Harrington, the second part of Season 5 ultimately does not depict Nancy making a romantic choice in Steve’s favor. The volume concludes without confirming any romantic pairing between Nancy and Steve. Instead, the narrative leaves Nancy unattached as the plot progresses towards its climactic showdown with Vecna.
Off-screen romance
Though Jonathan and Nancy’s on-screen narrative reaches its conclusion, the actors portraying them continue their relationship off-screen. In a recent conversation reported by People, Charlie Heaton shared his thoughts on collaborating with his girlfriend and fellow cast member, Natalia Dyer, describing it as a «precious» experience.
Heaton further elaborated on filming the last season, noting that certain final scenes represented some of the most genuine emotional performances of his career, an experience he anticipates will be unique and unrepeatable, according to People. Stranger Things Season 5 is being rolled out in three installments: Volume 1 debuted on November 26th, Volume 2 on December 25th, and the series’ concluding episode is scheduled for release on December 31st.
